The skin found on the lips are special, as it is very different from the skin found on the rest of the body. For one, the lips of the skin are more sensitive because it is thinner, three to five cellular layers compared to the sixteen layers on the rest of the body. Also, the skin of the lips does not have sweat glands. This means that the skin is without the protective layer of sweat and oils, making it more prone to dryness. Constant exposure to harsh UV rays and strong, cold winds can cause the skin on the lips to be dry and consequently chapped (cue images of hikers climbing the Everest or people crossing the desert). No amount of lipstick can fix how your lips look when this happens, unfortunately. For your lips to look their best, they have to be in the best condition.
A pair of soft lips, along with the eyes, plays a huge part in making a person attractive. According to studies, lips greatly contributes to a person’s attractiveness because it is a visible expression of fertility. It is said that the higher the amount of estrogen in the body, the larger the eyes and the fuller the lips. It is no wonder that the most beautiful women in the world have gorgeous eyes and full pouts. Here are a few tips to keep you lips soft, smooth and attractive.
Drink up! The only way to combat excessive dryness is moisture. For soft lips, amp up your water intake and make your kissers moist from within.
Be like a catterpillar. Start a change of diet and munch on some fruits and green vegetables. The vitamins and nutrients will surely metamorphasize your lips and give you a healthy body to boot.
Though it may seem like a quick and convenient solution to dryness, avoid licking your lips. It only moistens your lips for a short period of time and is actually a cause of dryness. Now, this tip is easier sad than done, since one can be unaware of doing it, but try to train yourself to keep it to a minimum. Or you can just slather on some lip balm so you don’t have to lick your lips.
Exfoliate. Removing the dry skin before moisturizing is the best way to keep your lips healthy and attractive. Scrubbing the top most layer of your lips will leave the new skin to be moisturized. No more flakes! One way to prepare your lips for moisturization is to take a soft toothbrush and scrub your moist lips in a gentle and circular manner. Another is to gently scrub sugar or salt onto your moist lips (make sure you don’t have wounds beforehand) in small circular movements.
Moisturize. There is a whole array of lip moisturizers in different forms in the market now, as well as natural moisturizers like butter and honey. When buying lip moisturizers, keep an eye out for Shea butter and Vitamin E which are both known for keeping the skin healthy. Use these moisturizing products and apply on your lips religiously throughout the day.
Arm your lips against the sun. Especially during the sunny season. Whenever you’re out in the sun, don’t forget to bring your lipbalm with at least SPF 15. Not only will your lips be kissably soft, they won’t get sunburnt either.
Acquire a nightly habit. Before heading off to bed, swipe on some petroleum jelly on you lips. The skin will absorb the petroleum jelly while you enjoy your good night’s sleep. Expect incredibly soft and moist lips when you wake up.
Enjoy and flaunt your perfect pout.
